Marijuana (cannabis) contains almost 200 terpenes and terpenoids. The terpenes are specific to each strain or phenotype. The terpenes together with the cannabinoids act together in what’s called the Entourage Effect.
The most prevelant terpenes found in cannabis include Alpha Pinene, Beta Pinene, Myrcene, Ocimene, Terpinolene, Linalool, Caryophyllene, and Humulene. There are two types of chromatography used to test cannabis: HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) and GC (gas chromatography). Because it doesn’t heat and destroy terpenes, GC is better for terpene profiles.
